The day included a resource fair, breakout sessions on campus life, and a campus tour. During lunch, students asked questions of current Millersville students. Comments (-1) Anti Bullying Assembly On Wednesday, September 18 th , Our Steel-High Middle School was treated to a special visit from a Harrisburg native, Chris “Handles” Franklin, from The Harlem Globetrotters. Chris has been all over the world, but one of his favorite things to do within his life is speak to young people about important issues such as bullying. After doing some amazing things with his basketball, Chris spoke about bullying and, through a few games involving a basketball (of course), reinforced how important it is to be respectful to everyone instead of bullying others. He also reinforced four important life concepts. They were: 1. Don’t do drugs. 2. Respect your teachers, coaches, and parents. 3. Do your best in school, and 4. Believe in your dreams. We hope he can come back and share some of his wisdom about other life issues. Comments (-1) September Junior Leadership Program In our September Junior Leadership program, all grade 7 and 8 students had the opportunity to hear two of our local leaders who took time from their busy days to come and speak to our Jr. High School students. Our kickoff speaker was Franklin Gantz, a lifetime local educational leader who served his community as a teacher and principal for 35 years. He spoke about his life and was honest about his successes as well as his challenges. Mr. Gantz stressed the value of real listening, being fully present, and illustrated through games, using students as participants, the difference between real listening and faking it. He gave an example of what happened to him in real life when he was not paying attention and how it changed his life forever. He also stressed the critical importance of staying in school, and how growing in education can change lives. Mrs. Gladys Dutrieuille is the current PA Chair of the Public Utility Commission who also came to Steel-High Jr. High School to speak to students about the vocational opportunities available in the utilities field. We learned there is a great need for skilled workers in this field. She also spoke about opportunities in the legal field which was an interest of our students. She answered scenario and general questions from our students about her knowledge as a lawyer. She told them about her personal journey to her current prestigious position in our local government as chair of the public utilities commission and spoke about what she believes will propel people into increasing positions of responsibility. EDUCATION! RESPECT! These are some of the keys to success, she said. We thank all participants of the Junior Leadership Program for sharing their stories and their wisdom with us!
